Background
The Foundation for Inorganic Chemistry within the University of Sydney was established in 1972. It exists for the encouragement of teaching and research at the University of Sydney in this important branch of modern science.The personal challenge of discussions with other experts, and the informal exchange of information between laboratories in different countries, are essential elements in scientific teaching and research. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide the means to
- arrange regular and extended visits to the University of Sydney by distinguished overseas scientists
- promote active scientific contacts and exchanges
- promote the University of Sydney and other institutions.
Functions are arranged at suitable intervals to enable the members to keep in touch with progress in inorganic chemistry within the School, and opportunities are provided for the members to meet the distinguished visitors who are brought to Sydney University with their help.
The Foundation is assisting the School of Chemistry to achieve its aims by supporting such activities on a scale which is impossible with the funds normally available from university or government sources. Contributions paid to the University for the benefit of the Foundation are fully tax deductible and become part of a capital fund. The income from the fund is used each year to support the program of the Foundation. In this way contributions become a source of continuing benefit to the inorganic chemistry students and staff in the School of Chemistry.
Objectives
The objectives of the Foundation relate to the promotion of Education, Study and Research in Inorganic Chemistry within the University of Sydney. In general, this is performed through:
- the recommendation of grants for the promotion of visits to the University by scholars, teachers and research workers from other institutions;
- the recommendation of grants to assist visits to other institutions and scientific conferences by scholars, teachers and researchers from the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney;
- admission to membership of appropriate persons, firms, companies or associations (incorporated or unincorporated);
- printing and issuing of publications to members and others;
- arranging for lectures, exhibitions and demonstrations;
- the soliciting of donations, gifts and bequests for the promotion of Education, Study and Research in Inorganic Chemistry within the University.
